The university students, Kdadalak sulimutuk Institute (KSI) and Alter Trade Timor (ATT) staffs decided to join the candle night in Timor-Leste after getting the invitation letter from Daichi-Wo-Mamoru-Kai. Through the mutual  cooperation,  University students organized by Peace Center  sent a letter to the Japanese Ambassador for Timor-Leste in Dili,  asking his permission to hold the candle night event in front of the Japanese Embassy office. The good news came; the ambassador replied positively which allow students to organize the event as proposed s on Sunday, March 11, 2012.

It was raining on 11^th of March, 2012 afternoon in Dili. The rain started at 2 Pm and continuously.  For those who planned to participate the candle night event were worried, it might be impossible to hold the candle night event under falling rains. Uka (ATT) who coordinating students, KSI, and ATT was too worried that it would be canceled because of the rain, or probably no one come.

As decided  before, 5 Pm the students would  gather at campus before going to Japanese embassy office at 6 Pm. Before 5 Pm, Some students texted to Uka that they couldn’t join the event because of rain and difficult to access to public transportation. So, Uka went to the campus, kept thinking that she wouldn’t find someone there. Then she realized that she was wrong, in fact, some students already there before 5 Pm and waiting there! She found 10 students were there.

Uka and students waiting for few minutes with hope of stopping rain and to get more involvement students and other friends. Then it happened, the rain stopped at 18.30 Pm, soon KSI staffs and their family confirmed that they were there at decided place already. Some students were also already there. ATT staffs and their family members were there and some are ready to be picked up to go to the same place as well. The students and Uka were becoming so excited that more people will join the event.

At 19.15 Pm, took place in front of Japan embassy in Dili 35 people were gathered there. Suddenly all gathering participants noted that, the embassy staffs also would join the event. 35 people were from university students, KSI staffs, ATT staff, and 2 Japanese embassy staff including 2 security of embassy. In total there were 39 participants joint the candle night.

Mr. Daniel Pereira initiated the event by given first floor to Mr. Naoki Nawa to share about current situation in Japan and his appreciation for the event. Then shared the candles among of attendants and lighted it collectively. All attendances lighted the candle in form of “heart symbol” to express the love from Timor-Leste to Japanese people. After lighting the candle the session proceeded into speech delivering. First speech was delivered by the embassy staffs also shared their though and appreciation to all participants, and shared the gift for participants as well.  Next speech from students who represented by Ms. Elia da Costa Araujo, she shared feeling of condolence and spirit of continue stand up for those who were victims of Tsunami and Earthquake in Japan. Followed by KSI, represented by Mr. Zulmiro who also shared solidarity message, though and reflection. He expressed that “on behalf of civil society organization, KSI really considered the tragedy of March 11 as a warning to all of human being to change the way of life. As a partner organization of ATJ, APLA and APF from Japan we would like to express our solidarity for all the victims. We do hope that the Japan government and civil society organizations learnt some new lessons from this tragedy, please work hard to heal all the traumas and to create good environment for the victims”.

The next session was praying together leaded by Ms. Antonieta Maria dos Santos (Director of  KSI). All of us prayed for the souls of all death people to be rest in peace, and we also prayed to the remain family members and disable persons for those who have hope of  healing. May God bless Japanese people for better life to be part of international community and to be part of East Timorese reconstruction process.

After praying, all attendants went to the beach side to release the flower prepared by the students as a symbol to pay respect and prayers to those people that passed away. All attendants were standing up in one line, facing the ocean, and released the flower at the same time.

After flower was released all participants getting back to the front side of Japanese embassy office, sharing some snacks, having chips, and soft drinks. At the end of event Japanese embassy staffs impressed that the candle night was really impressive and hopefully it will be more then impressive by good coordination beforehand between organizers and Japanese embassy. The event ended around 20.30 Pm.

All attendants were impressed and having feeling of the tragedy of March 11 mixed with small smile and happy then going home.

Distributing Balangon banana to evacuation center in Onagawa.

I-coop Miyagi Consumers Cooperative and Pal System Consumers Cooperative union jointly have carried out Takidashi service ( cook and delivery service of hot meal) for the Tsunami victims. On May 18 to 19, Balangon banana was delivered with eel rice bowl.

Balangon banana, donated by growers, were collected, packed and transported to Manila by ATC. Tanaka Seika Inc. (ripening), You-Package Inc. (repacking) and Taiyo-Shokuhan Inc. (transporting banana to Pal System distribution center) were dedicated to working for the support banana on free of charge. Then Pal System transported banana to Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, then the Takidashi-team (Pal system staffs and I-coop member) distributed more than 3,000 pieces of Balangon banana to 1,600 people.

After the meal service, 10 carton of the Balangon banana were delivered to another evacuation center, too.

I-coop Miyagi member joined the Takidashi-team. She said “I also ate Balangon banana by coop this morning.

EXPRESSION OF ATT STAFF FEELING TO THE FRIENDS IN　JAPAN IN PARTICULAR TO THE VICTIM OF EARTHQUAKE,  TSUNAMI AND VICTIMS OF NUCLEAR POWER PLANT;

1. We are here feel shocked when we heard the news about the earthquake and tsunami that trucked people in Japan, particularly in the area of Tohuku, Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima. We saw on TV there a lot of people died, missing and suffering until now. We heard that in Tokyo, thousands of people could not retu

rn home after the work and stay at the workplace. Dark night made a lot of people do not live as usual.

2. On  the eleventh of March, when we watched on TV, we thought the incident occurred only once, but in the following days we obtained information that victims was increased from day to day. We also heard that many people try to save themselves by distancing themselves from the areas of sea, but due to the snow season makes a lot of people who lost their homes  more suffering and even many of them died.

3. We also heard that not only the Tsunami and earthquake, but as its continuation, the other major  problem arisen at Dai-Ichi Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. Nuclear Power was melting has destroyed the environment in your country. Radioactive poison has made people more miserable. We also hear that your food

especially water, vegetables and milk also have been contaminated by radioactive poison derived from the TEPCO company. We also heard that workers who work in making cool the engine at the reactors mostly poor people.

4. We are concerned because many people lost their job, and do not work as normal as before. Farmers have been lost their gardens/farms, parents lost their children and down children lost their father or mother and family. The natural disaster was happened in your country reminded us of our crisis that made our people suffer as you are. The nature of the event might be different but the feeling of misery might be the same.

WE HAVE SOLIDARITY MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE IN JAPAN AS BELOW;

1. To the people who have passed away because of natural disaster, we pray may God blessed their soul and provide them a proper place in heaven.

2. For people who are suffering up to now, please be patient and make yourself strong to accept reality and continue take effort to stay alive. As a human beings, everyone has the same path toward same ending world, depending on the time to decide.

3. To the people who work in government institution an civil society organization in Japan that, natural disaster which have occurred could be a lesson to make s change for benefiting all people.

4. Your problems and misery as a good lesson for us here. As a new country we need to learn from the lessons.

5. We all need to share information to each other and it is the right time to change our way of life. We must adapt ourselves with the nature and keep our culture.

6. The modern technology can be used but it must not be a danger to the people’s life and more than that, local technology must be conserved in order to have balance life in the present and future.

7. We all are the same as human beings. We are living in the same atmosphere. Therefore it is important to remind each other to continue save the atmosphere that we live in.

2011年3月11日に日本を襲った地震と津波により壊滅的な被害が出ていること、老いも若きも関係なく非常に多くの尊い命を奪われたこと、そして今に至るまで何千人もの行方不明者がいることに深い悲しみを覚えています。特に、農地や家畜も被害を受け、ありとあらゆるものを失った農民の方々のことを思わずにはいられません。死者や行方不明者については報道されていますが、失われた農地や家畜についての報道はされていません。

福島原子力発電所の爆発事故についての報道によって、わたしたちの不安は増幅しています。原子炉の冷却がうまくいかずにメルトダウンの危険性があると聞きました。誰もが、これから起こることは並々ならぬ災害であると知っています。誇張ではなく、壊滅的・悲惨な被害がもたらされるでしょう。第二のチェルノブイリとなってしまっています。いや、チェルノブイリよりひどい事故であるということが明らかになりつつあります。

わたしたちは、日本の人びとの強固な意志を信じ、大変尊敬しています。もし今回の災害が地震と津波によるものだけだったら、みなさんにとってそこから復興をとげることはそれほど大変なことではなかったと信じています。神戸のときもそうですし、それはたびたび証明されています。

しかし、いまも原発から空気中に排出されている放射性物質や海に垂れ流されている汚染水についてはどうでしょう。浄化することは不可能です。そして、現在に至るまで、日本政府や東京電力がその放射性物質の排出を止めることができるという兆候は一向にみえてきません。

日本政府が定めた「ノーマンズランド（訳者注：立ち入りが制限された警戒区域）」は、原発から20キロ圏内が最終的な範囲なのでしょうか？　それともこれはただの始まりにすぎないのでしょうか？　20キロ圏内、そして圏外であってもすでに放射能汚染の影響を受けている地域の農地や農村コミュニティはどうなってしまうのでしょうか？　補償や謝罪は被害を埋めるのに十分ではありえません。天皇からの被災者に向けたメッセージも同様でしょう。日本政府と東京電力は責任を負うべきです。日本国内でも世界中でも、原発を稼動させることの危険性が指摘され続けてきましたが、それに耳を傾けなかった結果なのですから。

被災した日本の友人のみなさんの深い苦しみを思い、わたしたちも気が気でありません。わたしたちにできることがあればどんなことでも手を差し伸べたいと思っています。家族を亡くした方や愛する人が見つからない方に対して、心からお悔やみ申し上げます。そして、被災されたすべてのみなさん、その中でも特に農村のみなさんが一日も早い復興をとげられることを強く祈っています。

Many balangon banana farmers responded to the urgent call of Alter Trade Corporation Inc. for victims and they contributed around 3 tons of balangon banana.
The first shipment banana is scheduled to deliver to the victims in Ishinomaki City and Onagawa City, Miyagi prefecture in the middle of May in collaboration with Pal System and Ai Coop Miyagi.

We the growers of Tanjay, Negros Oriental in the areas of Matangad, Malalangse, Novallas, Cogon, Tabuc and Pal-ew wholeheartedly donated these balangon bananas even it is a short banana. We had seen in television and newspaper about the calamity that hit your place Japan, the earthquake and tsunami wherein many of your countrymen or maybe some of your relatives in the said area were died. With this, we the growers of Tanjay sympathize with what happened in your place and people. We are hoping that you will accept our small donations to you all.

We are sending 100 boxes of Balangon Banana as our donation for the March 11, 2011 victims of earthquake and tsunami. This also serve as our thanksgiving to our Japanese consumers for patronizing Tupi Balangon which has helped a great deal in alleviating poverty among our marginalized growers both Muslims and Christians alike. Please note that a majority of our growers were formerly NPA and MILF rebels but are now living peaceful and productive lives. Truly indeed Balangon is a fruit of love and peace.

わたしたちは、日本で起こった地震・津波という災害、そして原発事故のことを知り、大変ショックを受け、大きな悲しみを感じました。テレビで見たメンバー、ラジオで聞いたメンバー、他の人から聞いて初めてニュースを知ったメンバー、それぞれでしたが、みなが同じ思いでした。日本のみなさんが、大切な人を亡くしたり、住む家や働く場所も失ったりして、どんなに辛い思いをされているか…想像に難くありません。
しかし、より深刻な問題は原発事故の影響でしょう。原発が、土や水、食べ物に放射能という「毒」を撒き散らしている状況を考えると、そこに暮らす友人の皆さんへの影響のことを思い、とても悲しくなります。土地を失って農業をすることができなくなってしまった農民のみなさんや、同じく漁ができなくなってしまった漁師のみなさんに対しては、（同じ農民として）特に強い思いを感じずにはいらせません。

わたしたちは心から祈っています：

私たちは日本の消費者の皆さんにバランゴンバナナを買っていただくおかげで貧困から立ち上がってこれました。暮らしも少しずつよくなってきています。日本の皆さんへの恩返しとして、今厳しい状況に置かれている被災地の皆さんに、仲間98人が、10本、30本、50本と持ち寄って、合わせて3トンほどのバナナをお届けします。私たちのささやかな気持ちをお受け取りください。

To our Brothers and Sisters in Japan,

The disasters that struck your country last March 11, 2011, (earthquake and tsunami) have brought destructions and took the lives and damaged the properties of your people. It killed your loved ones, young and adult, that even until now, thousands are still missing. Farmlands and farm animals were destroyed. Farmers almost lost everything they own. There were news about your dead and missing persons, but there were no report on the dead and missing farm and domestic animals.

Then our fears multiplied when there were reports of blasts in the Fukushima Power Plant. The reactors failed and there were dangers of a meltdown. Everybody knows what will happen next is no ordinary disaster. It will be catastrophic in proportion. Another Chernobyl is in the making. But as it turned out, it is worst than Chernobyl.
We have faith and high regards to the strong will of the Japanese people. It is our belief that it will be very easy for you to clean up and make a recovery if you are only facing the damages created by the earthquake and the tsunami. You have shown it in so many occasions like in the Kobe earthquake.

But now, it’s a nuclear radiation from a blown out nuclear power plant that continues to discharge nuclear waste water in the ocean and nuclear radiation in the air every day. These cannot be cleaned up. And until now, there is no indication that your government and TEPCO, the operator of the nuclear power plant can stop it.

Is the twenty kilometer radius of the “no man’s land’ declared by the Japanese government, the last or just the beginning? What will happen to the farmlands and farming communities within this radius and beyond that were already affected? “Compensations” and “We are sorry” were not enough to repair the damage. Even a statement of “concern” from the Japanese Emperor is not enough. The Japanese government and the nuclear power plant operators should take the blame and responsibility. The Japanese people and the world have warned them about the dangers of operating a nuclear power plant but they did not listened.

We are deeply concerned of the sufferings and anguish of our dear brothers and sisters who survived these disasters in Japan and we voluntarily offer our hands to help whatever we can. We give our condolences and sympathy to the family of those who are dead and missing. And we offer our prayers for the fast and full recovery of those affected by the disasters especially the farming communities and the Japanese people as a whole.

The Kaneshige Farm-Rural campus, with our staff, trainees, networks, and friends from Negros, Northern Luzon and other parts of the Philippines declare our solidarity with the Japanese people, the Alternative People’s Linkages in Asia (APLA)with their peoples’ network all over Asia and other Japanese groups and organizations to demand the Japanese government to END THE CRISIS, FULLY REHABILITATE THE SURVIVORS and STOP THE OPERATION OF ALL NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS…NOW.

And our message to the peoples of the world, NO NUKES NOW! Let’ work for a NUCLEAR Free WORLD!
